With the current Swine flu epidemic killing people in Mexico and infecting people in the USA, New Zealand, France and Spain at time of writing the review, this book is an extremely useful resource for people who want to prepare their immune systems to be more resistant to H1N1 influenza. While this book covers the H5N1 Avian Influenza in detail - I wanted to let you know that the information in it is directly applicable to the current H1N1 Swine Flu virus because the Swine Flu virus is actually a mix of pig flu, bird flu and human flu. The H1N1 virus is the same virus that caused the 1918 flu pandemic that killed millions of people globally. The book is packed full of useful information about how to survive a pandemic using nutrition, herbs, homeopathics and even anti-viral aromatherapy oils and I include over 500 references to scientific papers that support my recommendations. There is also a fascinating history of pandemics and the treatments that helped throughout the ages and a very useful section on the practicalities of survival - including how to stockpile food and water should this virus mutate to cause a pandemic. Feeling tired all the time? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (The Facts)

Over the past decade, GPs have had to deal with increasing numbers of patients with a complaint for which there is no known cure: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Here two authors, one who has CFS, the other a doctor who has spent years helping sufferers, have combined their experiences to offer hope to the permanently exhausted.

An overactive or striving lifestyle, with inadequate time for rest and reflection over a long period is one possible trigger. A virus infection may act as a trigger in some people. A severe emotional upset or some other kind of trauma may be a cause in others. It could also be a combination of these things. You may well have found that doing nothing for a day or two makes you feel better, and believe that more rest is the answer. There is a real danger in people with chronic fatigue making themselves worse by becoming too inactive. Prolonged inactivity, even in fit people, can itself cause fatigue and make it harder to do anything. Spending a lot of time in bed or just sitting can make you feel weak and worsen pain.

It really will help your body if you can keep it moving, even if all you can manage is a small amount at intervals throughout the day. Little and often works well. The best forms of exercise for someone with chronic fatigue are bending, stretching, walking, swimming and cycling and alternating periods of activity, both physical and mental, with periods of good-quality rest. Your aim should be to stop before you become exhausted. Sticking to a consistent pattern of physical and mental activities, both during the day and over a week, is one of the best things you can do to give yourself more energy. Plan a programme for yourself and make sure it includes things that give you pleasure as well as necessary chores.

Why do you need to be so hard on yourself? It is possible to get as much satisfaction and pleasure by doing something you want to do in a different way. Spending an evening with friends, for example, can be just as enjoyable if you order a takeaway meal rather than preparing all the food yourself. If you still find it hard to stop being a perfectionist, try telling yourself that your pacing programme and getting better are your priority and concentrate on doing that in the best way you can.

Lost Films of Laurel and Hardy: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 [DVD]

Volume One of "The Lost Films of Laurel & Hardy" offers four misadventures of the boys from the late 1920s: "Big Business" (1929, 21 min.) has Laurel & Hardy as Christmas tree salesmen in July and is far and away the best offering on this DVD. James Finlayson becomes the test of their salesmanship and the battle is not over until his home and their business are totally destroyed. I like Tiny Sandord as the policeman who watches everthing while making copious notes, waiting for a reason to become involved, at which point Stan takes apart a piano with an axe. A comedy classic of the first rank. "Do Detectives Think?" (1927, 24 min.) has the distinction of being the first film to present Laurel & Hardy as the team we come to love. Convicted murderer Noah Young escapes from prison and vows vengeance on the judge (James Finlayson) who sentenced him. The boys are inept employees of a private detective agency assigned to guard the judge. Young goes after the judge with giant knives and swords, but the boys keep getting in his way. Even though they give up protecting their client, they do end up catching the convict by a fluke. "Call of the Cuckoo" (1927, 18 min.) merely features Laurel & Hardy as guest stars, their heads shaved because they were playing convicts in "The Second Hundred Years" being filmed at the same time. The star here is Max Davidson who moves into his new house only to discover every thing falls apart (including his bathtub). The boys do some sort of William Tell act. "The Finishing Touch" (1928, 21 min.), has Laurel & Hardy as contractors for agree to build a house in a day for an impatient homeowner while harassed by cop Edgar Kennedy. The best sequence has Oliver continually swallowing mouthfuls of nails. The only real problem with this two reeler is that there isn't a really satisfactory climax to it all. Also includes are a pair of Stan Laural solo shorts, "On the Front Page" (1926, 23 min.) and "Hustling for Health" (1918, 15 min.)

Tribute: Remember Jade Goody - Mother's Day 2009

Sad news on this Mothering Sunday 2009. Big Brother celebrity star has died in her sleep at 3.15am Sunday 22nd March.

Jade Cerisa Lorraine Goody was 27 and a UK celebrity. She came into the spotlight after appearing on the Channel 4 show Big Brother in 2002, which led to her own television programmes and the launch of her own products. In August 2008, she appeared on the Indian version of Big Brother, Bigg Boss, before withdrawing when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She married her boyfriend Jack Tweed on 22 February 2009.

On 2 May 2006, Jade published her autobiography titled Jade: My Autobiography, and in June she launched her own fragrance, Shh . . . Jade Goody. In Jade: Catch a Falling Star she speaks openly about all her past relationships and the trauma of her recent diagnosis.

Death in Eyam - The Plague Village

After a recent visit to this charming English village in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside, here is a little history about this unusual place. A bit depressing but very interesting.

Eyam, nestled in the Peak District, is best known for being the plague village that chose to isolate itself when the plague was found in the village in August 1665, rather than let the infection spread. Bubonic Plague had been brought to the village in a flea-infested bundle of cloth that was delivered to Eyam's tailor, George Viccars. The cloth was damp and was hung out in front of the fire to dry, thus releasing the plague infested fleas. Within a week George Viccars was dead.

After the initial deaths, the townspeople turned to their rector, the Reverend William Mompesson and the Puritan Minister Thomas Stanley. They introduced a number of precautions to slow the spread of the illness. These included the arrangement that families were to bury their own dead and the relocation of church services from the parish church of St. Laurence to Cucklett Delph to allow villagers to separate themselves, reducing the risk of infection. Perhaps, the best known decision was to quarantine the entire village to prevent further spread of the disease. The plague raged in the village for 16 months and killed at least 260 villagers: only 83 villagers survived out of a population of 350.

When the first outsiders visited Eyam a year later, they found that fewer than a quarter of the village had survived the plague. Survival appeared random, as many plague survivors had close contact with the bacterium, but never caught the disease. For example, Elizabeth Hancock never became ill, despite burying six children and her husband in eight days (the graves are known as the Riley graves). The unofficial village grave digger also survived, despite handling many infected bodies.

Eyam can boast various plague related places of interest such as the Boundary Stone, a stone in which money, usually soaked in vinegar, which was believed to kill the infection, was placed in exchange for food and medicine, and the Riley graves as mentioned above.

The church in the centre of the village has many relics of the Plague, including Mompesson's Chair, gravestones of plague victims and the Parish Register recording the deaths. Within the church there is a small exhibition about the plague. The church has two Norman columns, and may be built on Saxon foundations, but dates mostly from the 13th and 14th centuries. In the churchyard there is a magnificent Saxon cross.

Jade Goody first appeared on TV in 2002 when she was a contestant on Big Brother. The dentist is not a scary place!

I went to the dentist today for the first time in 10 years! I was worried to say the least. But it was a pleasant and reassuring time. The dentist looked over all my teeth, and gums & mouth, and told me of any problems and a course of action he would take. And it was not as bad as I thought it would be. Not scary at all. He told me to clean my teeth daily with this toothbrush for the best results and a whiter smile. Everybody was really nice.
